Meijer unveils streamlined shopping checkout program

RBR Staff Writer Published 17 April 2018

Supermarket chain Meijer has unveiled a new program, which will enable customers to use smartphone app for faster shopping.

Dubbed Shop & Scan, the program allows users to scan bar codes on items as they shop and bag their groceries while they move through the store, resulting in reduced checkout time.

The Shop & Scan technology will work with Meijer’s mPerks program through a fee app that customer can download via the App store.

After customers complete shopping, they can simply scan their phone at a self-checkout lane and pay.

The company launched this feature as an initial pilot last November at Grand Rapids, Michigan in area stores in Standale, Rockford, Walker, Grandville, and Jenison, and two stores in Holland, Michigan.

Since the initial launch, over 12,000 Meijer customers are claimed to have downloaded the app.

Meijer chief information officer Terry Ledbetter said: “Shop & Scan will make the Meijer experience dramatically faster and more convenient for our customers.

“This technology joins our curbside pickup and home delivery programs to provide yet another option for Meijer customers to personalize their shopping experience.”

The Shop & Scan program is expected to be rolled out across other stores of Meijer in the coming weeks and will be available at all the 235 stores by the end of this summer.

Early this year, Amazon opened a store Amazon Go in Seattle, Washington. The store has been fitted with computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning technologies.

The technology can identify when products are being taken from the shelves and placed in bags and keeps track of the products in a virtual cart. After the shopping has been done, customers can simply leave the store. Amazon will send a receipt and will charge the customer through his or her account.

More recently, Kroger announced a similar scan & go technology, which is similar to Meijer’s service.
